Above is my Idle Control Valve. My car stalled on me at a stop light, although started up right afterwards but it stalled about 30 seconds later when i came to a complete stop. I read on e30sport.net that 90% of idle problems are caused by the ICV.
It was recommended to spray carb cleaner or wd40 into the valve areas of the ICV. I sprayed wd40 into each side of the valves for about 10 seconds each. It's also recommended to tap the ICV with the end of a wrench to try and loosen any debris that may be interfering with the functionality of the unit. After cleaning, I put it back in my car and it's idling better than ever. So far so good.
Below is a picture of the engine bay. I wanted to point out the location of
the ICV but i didn't have time to photoshop the image. My apologies.
In this picture, the ICV is located to the right of the intake manifold and
sandwiched by the engine wall opposite the cabin of the car (did that make
sense ?).
It is held in by one nut attched to the intake manifold, rubber hoses at the top and bottom, and an terminal that feeds it electricity (i have unplugged the terminal in the picture above.) Unplug the terminal, loosen the hose clamp on the top hose, loosen the nut attached to the manifold, and pull it from the bottom hose. The ICV shouldn't be attached to anything and should pull right out.
